Whether WiFi is worth it on a Disney cruise really depends on how connected you want or need to be while you are at sea. Disney Cruise Line has simplified its internet options, and there are now two paid packages instead of the three that used to be offered.
Some connectivity is available for free. Messaging through the Disney Cruise Line app works without purchasing a package, and services like iMessage and WhatsApp messaging also function on the ship’s free WiFi. This is enough for many families to stay in touch with each other onboard without paying anything extra. Text only, no photos.
If you want full internet access, Disney offers an Internet package for about $30 per day per device. There is also an Internet plus Streaming package for about $49 per day per device. Both packages are slightly cheaper if you purchase them for the entire cruise instead of by the day.
Disney Cruise Line uses Starlink, which has significantly improved internet speed and reliability compared to the older satellite systems. While it is still not the same as home internet, it is good enough for browsing, email, social media, and even streaming if you purchase the higher tier plan.
The plans are sold per device, but there is some flexibility. Only one device can be online at a time on a single plan. You can log out on one device and log in on another, which allows families to share a single plan if they are willing to coordinate.
If you want a true digital detox, the free messaging may be all you need. If you need to work remotely, stay in touch with people at home, or stream content, the paid WiFi can be worth the cost.
