Shuffleboard is one of those classic cruise activities that feels a little unusual today since you rarely see it anywhere else. Shuffleboard dates back to the early days of ocean travel when passengers spent long stretches of time on deck during multi day crossings. Ships needed simple outdoor games that guests of all ages could play, and shuffleboard became one of the most popular.
Disney Cruise Line models many parts of its ships after the classic ocean liners of the past, so yes, they have shuffleboard. The wide promenade decks that circle the ship are designed to capture that same feeling of strolling along the water. Along these decks you will find several shuffleboard courts painted onto the floor. The discs and long push sticks are usually stored in a compartment or rack along the nearby wall.
The rules of shuffleboard are very simple. Players take turns sliding their discs down the long triangular court using the stick. The goal is to land your discs in the highest scoring sections without pushing them off the end of the court. You can also knock your opponent’s discs out of scoring positions which adds a fun bit of strategy to the game.
Most of the time you will find an open court somewhere on the promenade deck. Even when people are playing, games tend to move quickly since many guests just want to try it for a few rounds. If you have never played before it is worth giving it a shot. It is a relaxing way to spend a few minutes outside while enjoying the ocean views.
